okay....

That's right DE! I can't believe it was 18 years ago.... seems like only yesterday to me for some reason.... I remember watching it via a telescope from a pier in Jacksonville, NC...... it was awesome! My sis and her husband were there when he was in the Marines and I was visiting on vacation..... got the worst sunburn I ever had! and drove back from 75 degree weather into a 3 day blizzard in the mountains (-13 degrees F) by the time I pulled up in my driveway.... That was a B*tch to be burning up with a sunburn and freezing to death from the cold all at one time......that was a vacation I've never forgotten!

It is thought, that I originated in the Kalahari Desert of Africa. The first recorded harvest of me occurred nearly 5,000 years ago in Egypt and is depicted in Egyptian hieroglyphics on the walls of their ancient buildings. I was often placed in the burial tombs of kings to nourish them in the afterlife.
From there, I spread throughout countries along the Mediterranean Sea by way of merchant ships.
By the 10th century, I found my way to China, which is now the world's number one producer of me.
The 13th century found me spread through the rest of Europe via the Moors.
In 1615 the word which is now what I'm known by first appeared in the English dictionary.
The United States currently ranks fourth in worldwide production of me. Forty-four states grow me with Florida, Texas, California, Georgia and Arizona consistently leading the country in production.
I have become a year-round staple in households the world over. With more countries than ever importing and exporting me....... I'm also a summer favorite....... What am I?

I have to agree. If it's not rice, then it's probably salt or sugar, maybe cinnamon. But I think it's rice. Hot, you are probably correct....
